cross-gendered behavior among both male-born and female-born
individuals, whereas "winkte winyan" specifies
"female-born." It was more common for winktes to be
male-born. Also, the Lakota Sioux revered winktes as sacred, but
the Dakota Sioux ceremonially disowned and condemned
them.)
